Mary Linda Casey
Mary
Linda Casey is a partner with the law firm of Lucas,
Holcomb and Medrea, Merrillville, Indiana. She
received her undergraduate degree from Indiana
University, Bloomington, Indiana in 1967. After
graduation from Indiana University, Bloomington law
school in 1970, she worked for eight years as an
attorney with the Estate and Gift Tax Division of
the Internal Revenue Service. In this capacity, she
audited Gift and Estate Tax Returns and Fiduciary
Income Tax Returns.
Areas of Practice.
As a partner with Lucas Holcomb & Medrea, a major
portion of her practice is in the estate planning
and probate area. She prepares estate plans and
handles the probate and death matters for clients of
the firm and on referral from smaller firms and solo
practitioners. Currently, approximately ninety
percent of her time is devoted to matters involving:
(a) planning and the drafting of instruments for
life time gifts and transfers at death in areas
including the minimizing of gift, estate, and
generation-skipping taxes, the timing and transfer
of control of small businesses and family farms,
charitable giving and the planning for retirement
benefits in the estate plan; and (b) in the
administration of the plans, trusts and estates in
matters including the preparation of Federal Estate
Tax Returns, Indiana Inheritance Tax Schedules,
Fiduciary and Final Income Tax Returns and related
meetings with individual clients, bank trust
officers, referring attorney clients, and
participation in audits with representatives of the
IRS and Indiana Department of Revenue. She has a
limited practice in matters relating to Indiana real
estate assessment and Indiana real estate tax
matters.
Professional Recognition and Membership.
She has been granted Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory's
highest rating as a result of an extensive,
confidential review conducted among the legal
profession in this community. She is a Fellow in
the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC)
which requires state and national approval based on
the candidate's demonstrated skill and ability in
probate, trust or estate planning law. She is
certified by the Estate Planning and Administration
Specialty Certification Board as an Indiana
Specialist in Estate Planning and Administration.
She was selected as an Indiana Super Lawyer 2007 in
the areas of Estate Planning & Probate, the only
Lake county attorney so designated. Mary Linda is a
member of the Lake County, Indiana and American Bar
Associations. She is a member of the Lake County
Bar Association Probate Section and has served as an
active member on the Ethics Committee and
Unauthorized Practice of Law Committees of the
Indiana Bar Association.
Volunteer Activities.
In other endeavors, Mary Linda volunteered her legal
services to form the Legacy Foundation, Inc., and
the Crown Point Community Foundation, Inc. (both of
the community foundations in Lake County, Indiana,
and the Merrillville Chamber Advancement Foundation,
Inc.) She continues to voluntarily serve as legal
counsel for the Legacy Foundation, Inc. She
completed a 16 year term as Trustee of the Jasper
County Library Board. She has served as an elected
member of the Executive Council of the Indiana
University Alumni Association and on the Executive
Council for the Indiana University Law School Alumni
Board. She is as active member in the Trinity
United Methodist Church. She serves as a volunteer
on numerous activities and committees associated
with the Rensselaer community and its schools.
At Play
Mary Linda resides with her husband John, an attorney,
in Rensselaer, Indiana. They enjoy summer lake
activities in southern Indiana, ballroom dancing
lessons, and bridge. They are the parents of one
daughter, Megan, who lives in Indianapolis.
